The internet has taken a lot of focus off of magazines. When you think about it if you need information or want to look up the latest celebrity gossip you just go online and click. If you already have internet then this don't cost you anything extra and it is instant information. Unfortunately, we live in a world that encourages instant gratification. Hope this helps! - Stacy

Reader's Digest is basically an idea whose time has passed. It appealed to many Americans who wanted to be more well-read but didn't have the time or inclination to do so. Without today's all-pervasive media, it was in many parts of the country a pseudo-cultural experience.

Nowdays, with both the Internet and TV delivering virtually thousands of pages of data and information daily, Reader's Digest simply became not that important anymore.

There is a trend toward passive instruction/entertainment. People would much rather have information wash over them than to have to work for it (i.e., read and research). It is an unfortunate truth about our times and will doom many magazines and newspapers to obscurity and eventual failure. The silver lining (if there is one) is that people who want to work a bit harder can distinguish themselves by reading on top of (or instead of) watching CNN and MSNBC, surfing the Internet, and listening to talk radio. They will be, in the final analysis, more well-informed and well-rounded than the masses who all derive their information and knowledge from the same few passive sources.

I think that there are thousands of new magazine titles, jammed with all the content you can imagine, and this creates more competition for readers in general.

I've tried reading it many times. The articles don't touch my life at all. I can't get myself interested in it. People have different tastes.
