First of all the people who are against the media, or whatever, are only against it because of one of two reasons. One... The VT shootings....Two...They are reporting the FACTS about Bush, Iraq and our government (which they think makes Bush look bad).
The media is great way to get all sorts of information. You can get the scores from last nights game, schedules of upcoming games, the obituaries (which for some people is the only reason the buy a newspaper). You can learn about all sorts of current events in your area or around the world. You can find the movie showtimes and reviews as well as entertainment news. Most importantly in my mind is the weather. How else would we know to take cover if a tornado is in your area, or a hurricane is about to hit, or to stock up on food, water and wood because 2 feet of snow are going to fall overnight.
People who think the media is bad don't realize what it would be like to live in a world where there are no magazines, newspapers or news channels etc. If we didn't have a media the only way to find out about the baseball game last night would be to go or talk to someone who went. We'd have no idea what was going on in Iraq, and personally I think our government would be able to keep us out of the loop a lot more. I watched a documentary on Lincoln and the Civil War not too long ago. The guards at the prison camps were allowed to do whatever they wanted to to their soldier prisoners. Sure this still happens today, but once it hits the press the situation is taken care of. This went on throughout the entire Civil war...with Lincolns knowledge and approval!!!

The media gives listeners a variety of perspectives on issues, National Public Radio is a direct service to the people. In this case advertisers are people who donate to keep it on air. Media conglomerates give us the big money point of view with the intention of "fair and balanced reporting" . And so, you have CNN and Fox News, they specialize in examining controversial issues and confrontation of "Sin", i.e.Priests who are pedophiles etc. Then you have Black Entertainment Network, Latin news all of which service the communities in the cultural context and language common among it's listeners. Increasingly, because of the recent spat of tornadoes, the media has informed the public of incoming severe weather and what to do. Finally, overall news arguably has an independence from a State Run News, like Castro's Cuba and Putin's Russia.

The media, has the power and the authority to convey facts.
It has the responsibility to be truthful, and by doing so keeps check on abuses, injustices, and corruption, regardless.
At great risk to its reports, brings news were news is unavailable or distorted.
It has the higher moral ground to accept the role of a beacon when the civil liberties are in danger, when the environment is affected by human decisions, when future generations are in danger of accepting government and corporate decisions that do not have their best interests in mind.

Boy, what a tough assignment! I'm afraid that most of the current American News Media does *not* help *any* American people, unless they're Libs! They almost all seem to be in "lock-step" with the so-called "Progressives", or as Rush Limbaugh calls them, the "Defeat-o-crats"! With the exception of the "Washington Times" and "New York Post" newspapers, Fox News TV, USA Radio News and Salem Radio News and, *maybe*, "The Wall Street Journal", the American News Media seem to be biased against our current President and, often, against America, itself!
