Please don't take offense to this answer and I'll answer it more completely, but firstly, if you're applying for this position and if you have to ask this question, you aren't qualified for the job. I worked in the New York City market since the late 80's for both network and local news, mostly in management positions and worked very closely with many amazing photogs. Photog pay varies considerably in the NY market and depends on one critical factor: is the position union (IBEW)?

Photojournalist definition: inflated title given to video photographers (photogs) to make them feel elite allowing the news organization to give them more work (day and night for extended periods of time) & more hazardous work at the same pay as "common" newsroom photogs.

A network photographer can easily make a six figure salary in New York City...but so can a local news photographer. Heck, so can a local news photographer who works part time! CNN historically pays very poorly. If you were qualified for this job, you would be doing it not for the pay, but for the chance to travel and the excitement of the assignments and their locations.

Another thing that you should know regarding this posting: it is highly likely that there are many in-house candidates who would kill their Moms to get this position and it's very probable the News Director or whoever runs the shop already knows who is going to get that slot. If for some reason an outsider were to be hired for this position, that person (depending on the level of "mentoring" they have to do with the other photogs) better have extensive experience because if there's one thing I've learned about the pack of wolves known as photographers, if the new blood doesn't earn the respect of the pack fast, they'll devour him/her and that person will be fired or forced to leave.

So, will you earn more than 100,000? Easily. What type of person have I known who got this type of position? Former military or 10-15 years experience with a deep resume reel with a lot of travel to disaster s, investigative/undercover experience.

The best answer to your question only you will know. Because the 'best' genre of photography is a personal preference only you will know. You can love taking portraits and hate landscapes or vise versa. The stress factor is also based on your personal preference. If you love taking weddings then this won't be as stessful to you as it would be to someone who hates portrait or event photography. The money, well, that is baased on how well your photographs are and how hard you work. To me, landscape and travel photography is the most relaxing genre of photography but can be the least profitable at times and the hardest to break into. Though hiking 30 miles into the wilderness to capture a sunset scene or living in your car for months to complete a photo documentary is fun and relaxing to me, to others it can be a nightmare. For me it is about the experience. Yeah it would be great to make alot of money from my passion, but at the same time it is a daunting idea because the 'hardships' persay is what makes the experience. If I could make just enough to live off of and continue my passion (even if that means I'm living in my car or cheap motels), I would be the happiest man on Earth.
